“On April 16th of 1988
Five strong women put their hands in faith
The Red, the Gold, the Black and the White
Together we stand as Lambda Pi Chi”

The first Latina-based sorority founded at an Ivy-league institution, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. was established on April 16, 1988 at Cornell University by five strong, visionary women. The Founding Hermanas: Patricia Rivera, Maria Caban, Eva Marie Sosa, Migdalia Franklin, and Dr. Irma Almirall-Padamsee strove to establish an organization that would transcend their collegiate experience and consolidate their strength as responsible members of the community. As undergraduate students, they worked diligently to develop an organization whose mission and goals would encompass the experiences of all women, and whose ideals would nurture the growth of its members throughout their lives.

Today, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. represents a tradition of strong, proud women whose lives and achievements reflect an undying commitment to public service, sisterhood, and the preservation of the rich cultural legacies that shape our experiences. Committed to the three ideals upon which our organization's foundation stands -- La Comunidad, La Cultura Latina, and La Hermandad -- Las Hermanas strive to promote progress and development in the communities of which we are a part. It is this unwavering commitment to nuestra comunidad that frames our individual and collective goals. Comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and professional women, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. seeks to unify women through the promotion of community service programs that highlight the contributions of women and people of color, and offer opportunities for academic and professional advancement to members of historically under-represented groups.

Our Mission

“We, Las Hermanas de Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., founded at Cornell University on April 16, 1988, pledge to promote the distinguished ideals of La Comunidad, La Cultura Latina, y La Hermandad. Through the support and strength of Nuestra Hermandad, we aim to advance the Latino Community through dedicated service, as well as foster an appreciation for Nuestra Cultura Latina. It is through the sincere knowledge that La Hermandad Nunca Termina that we will accomplish all we have set out to do.”

20 undergraduate and professional chapters span the Eastern United States border - each a web threaded by the collegiate, professional and Latino communities, each embodying el sabor, el color y la pasión del alma Latina and each comprised of women striving for excellence and shaping their own destinies. Founded 16 years ago, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. brings to life a vision whereby women, despite ethnic, academic and economic backgrounds, step forward to unite and lead within La Comunidad.

Whether taking matters into our own hands (The H.A.C.E.R. Initiative), leveraging existing tools and solutions (World AIDS Day and Project LEAAP) or partnering with organizations and corporations (Young Scholars with Flava), Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. places no limit on what we can do or where we can go.

Developed at Cornell University in the late 80's by women who felt a need to strike out on their own, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. has transcended the collegiate experience to become a vehicle for the promotion of the Latino community. Today, with over 200 women of all cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds, our determination and commitment continue to define our relentless spirit.

Goals and Purposes

As is evident in our name, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. is an organization whose central tenets not only affirms the importance of service to our communities but also encourages active participation in shaping our future. This is reflected in our three ideals, La Comunidad, La Cultura Latina, and La Hermandad. Our programmatic objectives are formed by these ideals. Las Hermanas sponsor a diverse array of educational programs that focus on critical issues affecting the community, and provide forums for social, cultural, and political exchange. These programs are sponsored in collaboration with local community-based organizations, social service agencies, student groups, and other Greek-letter organizations, in an effort to promote unity and collective achievement.
