Diva Desai is a marketing supervisor for McDonald’s Corporation and a member of the USA National Handball Team. She earned the skills for both jobs at Carolina.
“My involvement with the Team Handball Club was actually random. I wanted to try something new at UNC, and I knew that part of keeping my sanity in college would be finding a sport to play,” the 2011 Carolina graduate says. “I wanted something more stable than intramurals so I decided to try handball.”
Learning a new sport, especially one considered fairly uncommon, wasn’t easy. Desai says her friends helped make the learning curve less intimidating.
“I was blessed to have fantastic teammates while at Carolina and they definitely made my college experience unforgettable,” she says.
The Tar Heel team won three consecutive Collegiate National Championships while Desai was at UNC. Desai was promoted from public relations officer as a sophomore to president of the women’s team for her final two years at Carolina. At that time, she also began playing for the U.S. Women’s Junior and Senior National teams.
“Traveling internationally and representing your country in these matches against national teams of other countries was more than I possibly could have dreamed of when I first started handball,” Desai says.
Because of the flexibility at her job at McDonalds, Desai has been able to continue working and training around the world. She says her experience at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School led her to the job at McDonalds.
“Two years later, I really like my job and it’s allowed me the flexibility to learn about marketing from some of the best in the industry while still training for the U.S. National Team,” she says.
