CONCENTRATION IN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES
in the Curriculum in International and Area Studies

Middle East Studies is one of six area studies concentrations within the Curriculum in International and Area Studies.

Requirements

  1. Concentrators take one required course that gives an overview of the topic and an extended justification for Carolina's distinctive, cross-regional approach:

ASIA 181/INTS 137/ RELI 181 Later Islamic Civilization and Modern Muslim Cultures

This course is taught each year in the spring.

  2. Concentrators take six semesters of a language of the modern Middle East. Current offerings at Carolina allow concentrators to take six semesters of Arabic. Alternatively, in keeping with the Curriculum's regulations, concentrators may take four semesters of Arabic, Modern Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish (currently offered at Duke), plus two semesters of another language.

  3. Concentrators are encouraged to consider Study Abroad opportunities in the Middle East.

  4. Concentrators take four additional courses that focus on the modern Middle East, and two courses in one of the three thematic concentrations to contextualize the student's area-based knowledge. Of these six courses, four must be above survey level.
