Lecturer Position
in Persian, UNC-Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill invites applications for a
two-year renewable lecturer position in Persian language and culture
beginning July 1, 2010. We are seeking a skilled language instructor
with a commitment to a proficiency-based approach to language teaching
at all levels, and an interest in ongoing professional development.
Native or near-native fluency in Modern Persian and English is
required. Experience teaching Persian to nonnative speakers is
preferred. At least an MA in Persian, applied linguistics, or an allied
field of the humanities, social sciences, journalism, or education is
preferred, but those who will have completed an MA by July 1, 2010 will
be considered. Applicants having ACTFL-OPI certification or interested
in acquiring such a certification are preferred. Responsibilities
include teaching three courses per semester (primarily Persian
language, and also some content courses) and developing a Persian

Assistant
Professor Position in Islamic studies, UNC-Chapel Hill
The Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant
Professor of Religious Studies and Kenan Rifai Fellow in Islamic
Studies, starting July 1, 2010. Preference will be given to
candidates who already have a PhD in hand. Area of specialization
is open, and could include (but not be limited to) the study of the
Qur'an, Islamic law, Islam in America, gender debates in Islam, and
other topics. Research interests should include the study
of Islamic spirituality and/or Sufism. We seek to complement existing
regional strengths in South Asia and Iran. Candidates should have
knowledge of the relevant language(s) and demonstrate strong research
potential. Teaching duties will include introductory and
upper-level undergraduate courses on Islamic studies as well as
graduate-level seminars. The successful candidate will also be
expected to work with doctoral students, and to collaborate with
faculty in the Department of Religion at nearby Duke University.
Both teaching and research need to be connected to the problems and
issues of religious studies broadly conceived and to the graduate
concentration in Islamic studies.

Senior Lecturer/Reader in the Study of Islam and Muslims (equivalent to

Education
Summer Overseas Resident Directors
American Councils is currently seeking qualified Resident Directors to
work overseas on summer programs ranging from five- to eight-weeks in
length. Programs are designed for high school students,
university students or teachers and are focused on foreign language
acquisition. Countries and number of positions include:
Azerbaijan (1), China (6), Egypt (1), Japan (2), Nigeria (1), Russia
(11), South Korea (1), Tajikistan (3), Tanzania (1) and Turkey (3).
ANTICIPATED EMPLOYMENT DATES: Early June - to mid August 2010 (exact
appointment dates will vary according to program specifics).
Resident Directors represent American Councils in their actions and
words during the tenure of their appointment. They must be
available to program participants on a daily basis; observe participant
classes at the host university; meet regularly with teachers,
administrators, and participants; and arrange group travel and cultural
programs. Resident Directors must be available to participants during
any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with the
American Councils program staff in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities include logistics for the group while overseas,
communications, counseling of individual students when needed, and
troubleshooting, Resident Directors oversee a program budget, and are
responsible for proper documentation of program expenditures and timely
completion of a budget report at the end of the month and end of the
program. Prior to departure, all Resident Directors must attend
American Councils orientation programs for both staff and participants.
Resident Directors are required to travel with their respective
participant groups at the beginning of their programs and return to
Washington, DC with the group at the end of the program. Resident
Directors report to the DC-based Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in language of host
country or area studies or equivalent;
• Advanced language skills -- written and oral
(minimum 2/2+ on ACTFL scale) in the relevant target language
• Study, work, or extensive travel experience in host
country;
• Experience overseeing and guiding groups;

counseling; and

The Civilization Sequence Program (CVSP) at the American University of
Beirut (AUB) invites applications for two positions to begin September
15, 2010. The positions are in Islamic philosophy with a comparative
interest in European medieval philosophy and 19th century studies with

the Assistant Professor level for an initial period of four years.

The CVSP is a service program which offers a number of
interdisciplinary undergraduate humanities courses. Course load is
normally nine hours a week. The language of instruction is English. The

courses from the ancient to contemporary periods on a regular basis and
will also be offered the opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate
courses in service of the CVSP mission close to his/her research

The Crown Center for Middle East Studies - Junior
Scholar Fellowship
The Crown Center for Middle East Studies is offering one-year junior
scholar fellowships to outstanding scholars of Middle East politics,
economics, history, religion, or social developments for the 2010-11
academic year. This fellowship can be either a post-doctoral position
for new PhDs or a research fellowship for assistant professors during
their year off from teaching. It will allow junior scholars the
flexibility and means to advance a specific research project related to
the contemporary Middle East.
About the Crown Center
The Crown Center's research interests encompass the twenty-two members
of the Arab League, stretching from Morocco to Iraq, as well as Israel,
Turkey, and Iran. The Center's research focus extends well beyond
Arab-Israeli tensions to include Middle East politics, Islamic studies,
economic and social developments, and regional security and arms
control. The Center's research staff reflects its broad geopolitical
focus. During its three years of operation, experienced researchers
with high-level expertise about Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Iraq,
Iran and Saudi Arabia conducted research for the Center. In addition to
hosting conferences, seminars, and workshops, the Center has created
tools for "real-time" distribution of analyses regarding current
developments and events in the Middle East with its "Middle East
Brief." The Center also publishes article-length monographs titled
"Crown Papers," which is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication. The
Center's staff teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level courses at
Brandeis University.
Eligibility
The 2010-2011 junior fellowship is open to both recent Ph.D.s (as a
post-doctoral position) and assistant professors in Middle East related
fields. PhD must be completed by September 1, 2010.
Terms
This fellowship is a one-year appointment beginning September 1,
2010 and ending June 30, 2011. The stipend for these 10 months will be
$43,000. In addition funding is available for research, travel, and
related expenses. Fringe benefits will be available during the
appointment period. Appointment is subject to budgetary approval.
Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Crown Center during the
tenure of the fellowship. During their residence, fellows are required
to produce a scholarly article related to his/her research project to
be submitted to the peer-reviewed "Crown Papers" series, write a Middle
East Brief, and participate in all Crown Center seminars, conferences

2010, from scholars specializing in Gender and Islam. The successful
candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Religion Department and
in the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. Applicants

tradition and practice; Islamic law, rights, and gender; theories of
