The Butner Buddhist Group was established at the Butner Low Security Federal Corrections Center in 1998 by members of the Charlotte True Buddha Temple.  Volunteers from that temple visit on the third Sunday of the month from 1:30-3:30 p.m. to provide a Dharma talk and discussion of Buddhist philosophy.  Attendence is usually six to fifteen inmates and two or more volunteers.

The Kadampa Center also operates a prison ministry at the Butner facility.  They visit three times a month for or two hours per session, either on Tuesdays or Thursdays.  Meetings tend to draw from two to ten people.  Inmates are introduced to Buddhism and then given progressively more advanced Tibetan practices and teachings.
