Wilmington Zen Group is a
meditation-oriented group established in February of 2001. They meet
at the Unitarian-Universalist fellowship on Lake Avenue in Wilmington,
Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Meetings consist of forty
minutes of silent seated meditation, followed by ten minutes of walking
meditation, and another thirty-minute sitting period. The minutes are occupied by readings from Zen-related texts. There are
no other liturgical elements to the service. The group has ten core
members and several other occasional participants.
In addition to regular practice
on Tuesdays, the group has occasional social events such as potlucks.
The group is visited regularly by Taitaku Pat Phelan from Chapel Hill Zen Center
and has affiliated with that institution, though it also contains people trained
in other Zen lineages, including
Japanese and Korean traditions.
