April abounds with concerts, recitals by UNC musicians

CHAPEL HILL -- Music lovers have a feast before them this month as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill music department presents an abundance of concerts to close the academic year.

Choral groups, concert and jazz bands, percussion and wind ensembles and more will perform, mostly in Hill and Person halls, just off East Franklin Street. Most concerts will be free; all will be directed by UNC music faculty members and open to the public.

"April is indeed a busy month for student and faculty performers in the music department," said James Ketch, professor and department chair. "The public is cordially invited to attend the many student recitals, faculty concerts and ensemble programs as we complete this very successful 2001-2002 academic year. A quick glimpse at our concert offerings will reveal music appealing to many tastes."

Among the concerts will be Sunday’s (April 7) "Lessons We’ve Learned" by Lighter Shade of Blue, an auditioned, 14-voice mixed ensemble that studies and performs popular music, from blues and Motown to country and western. Directed by clinical associate professor Dr. Daniel Huff, the group will perform music theater and popular tunes including "Jump, Jive and Wail" and "Yakety Yak." The concert will be performed twice, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., in the Great Hall of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. Tickets will be $4 at the door. Dancers welcome.

For a different style of singing, consider a free April 14 concert of music by Brahms, Rheinberger and Schumann by the Carolina Choir and the UNC Chamber Singers, directed by professor Susan Klebanow and accompanied by professor Dr. Thomas Warburton on organ. The groups also will perform Finzi’s "Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice."

The 80-member choir performs the finest in choral literature, ranging from a cappella music of all periods to the choral/orchestral masterworks. The chamber singers, an ensemble of 25, performs vocal chamber music of different styles, emphasizing Renaissance, Baroque and 20th-century music.

The department’s jazz studies program will end its busy season with the last installment in this year’s Jamey Aebersold Visiting Jazz Artists Series. Aebersold, a professional saxophonist and jazz educator, gave the department funding to bring to campus four visiting artists per year for two years (through 2002-2003).

Aebersold will visit UNC on April 29 and 30 to rehearse with student musicians, teach a jazz improvisation class and perform with the UNC Jazz Bands, directed by Ketch and John V. Brown. Selections will include Phil Woods’ "Samba Dubois," Don Sebesky’s "Sadly" and Hank Mobley’s "Take Your Pick."

Also at the concert, this year’s Fred and Gail Fearing Prizes in Jazz will be awarded to students who have made significant contributions to the jazz program.

On April 18, associate professor Lynn Glassock will direct the percussion ensemble in selections by composers ranging from Renaissance-era William Byrd to the Dave Matthews Band. Pieces by Glassock, an award-winning composer, also will be played.

Guest percussionists from Athens Drive High School in Raleigh will join the show. The ensemble draws upon a large family of pitched and non-pitched instruments; the number of players and amount of equipment varies from piece to piece.

Other major attractions will include the opera "From the Towers of the Moon" on April 19 and 20 and "Celebrating Stravinsky: A Festival on the Hill" April 26 and 27 [featured in earlier news releases].
