CHAPEL HILL -- A touring performance show that includes jazz music, live painting and modern dance will stop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill May 1.

The Jump Arts American Road Show, a New York City performance art tour, will perform at 8 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $5 and $2 for UNC students. Tickets are available at Union Box Office, 962-1449, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.

"This is a great opportunity for Chapel Hill because normally people have to go to a bigger city to see this kind of performance art," said Charles Phaneuf, the 2002-2003 Carolina Union Activities Board president.

The road show was created by Jump Arts Inc., a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for artists of different generations, backgrounds and experiences. The Carolina Union Activities Board is sponsoring the UNC appearance.

The show will include M.P. Landis doing a live painting with performances by modern dancers around him. The tour will also feature the Gold Sparkle Band, a trio jazz group that originated in Atlanta. The group members are Andrew Barker (drums, percussion, composition) Charles Waters (saxaphone, clarinet, composition) and Adam Roberts (double bass). The band is releasing its fourth album "Fugues and Flowers" this month.

"Sight and Sound Constructions," a dance, music and spoken word performance will feature Okkyung Lee (cellist), Steve Dalachinski (poet) and Sabir Mateen (saxophone).

"The Transcendentalists are an experimental jazz group with trumpet player Daniel Carter, " Phaneuf said. The other Transcendentalist members are Steve Swell (trombone), Tom Abbs (bass, tuba), David Brandt (drums) and special guest Sabir Mateen (winds).
