Sixty-six students receive academic, service, leadership awards at UNC

CHAPEL HILL -- Sixty-six of the brightest and most dedicated students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were honored yesterday (April 22) with the university’s top academic, service and leadership awards.

Chancellor James Moeser presided at the ceremony. Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little, executive associate provost, and Dr. Dean Bresciani, interim vice chancellor for student affairs, presented the 2003 Chancellor’s Awards. Proud parents and professors looked on as the high achievers collected medals, plaques and other decorations -- and congratulations -- from the university’s top leaders.

"Receiving one of these awards is perhaps the greatest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate at Carolina," said Dr. Cynthia Wolf Johnson, UNC associate vice chancellor for student learning and supervisor of the awards program an the ceremony.

"Among these students are individuals who translate Greek and Latin at sight, deliver captivating speeches extemporaneously or otherwise excel in many different areas of academics or co-curricular student life," she said. "They are the sharp thinkers, innovative researchers and unselfish crusaders who will go on to make this world a better place."

Standouts in a room filled with standouts included John Philip Hobach of Seminole, Fla., who won two awards: The Archibald Henderson Prize in Mathematics, to the undergraduate with a high degree of mathematical ability and the greatest promise of originality in the field, and the Paul E. Shearin Outstanding Senior Award in Physics, to the senior majoring in physics who is most outstanding on the criteria of scholarship, scientific insight and professional seriousness.

Janet D. Jackson of Hillsborough, winner of the McNally Award for Excellence in Geography, began pursuing a bachelor's degree in 1991. She started taking courses at UNC in 1999 through the continuing education program. Jackson, who will receive a bachelor's degree in geography

with a minor in information science on May 18, is geographic information systems coordinator for the Orange Water and Sewer Authority, which serves the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community.

Russell Bart Pate, son of Mark and Marguerite Pate: The Rob Park Memorial Award, to the senior who has made a significant contribution by improving educational and community service programming to assist undergraduates in learning about the legal system, the rigors of a legal education and the changing nature of the legal profession.

Chapel Hill
Sarah Kasey Gore, daughter of Tony and Rebecca Gore: The Patrick F. Earey Award, to the graduating senior who has exhibited outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular involvement and leadership.

Claire-Elisabeth Anne Hartman, daughter of Tara Hartman: The Alexander Julian Fellowship in Design, to an undergraduate exhibiting an outstanding sense of design, which the faculty interpret as a mature integration of formal issues and content and who the faculty believe has done the most outstanding work in studio art.

Jonathan Arnold Karpinos, son of Ralph and Carolyn Karpinos: The Albert Suskin Prize in Latin, to the undergraduate who shows the best ability to understand Latin poetry and translate selected passages at sight.

Kunal Nandy, son of Kailas and Indrani Nandi: The Willie P. Mangum Medal in Oratory, to the senior class member who gives the best oration at an annual contest.

Charlotte
Katrina Latisha Harper, daughter of Jack and Sherri Harper: The Wallace Ray Peppers Award in Performance of African-American Literature, to the junior or senior in the department who is most outstanding in performance of African and African-American literature.

Bradley William Morris, son of Robby and Lorrie Morris: The Worth Award to the undergraduate with sustained excellence in philosophy.

Jennifer Kristen Taylor, daughter of James and Judith Taylor: The Robert B. House Memorial Prize in Poetry, to the graduating senior who has done distinguished work in poetry. This award was presented twice, also to Kerri Marie French of Greensboro.

Concord
Paul Jang, son of Sun and Jung Jang: The Venable Medal, to the two most outstanding seniors majoring in chemistry. Also presented to Randall Trenton Rhyne of Raleigh.

Farmville
Lewis Chandler Deans, son of Robert and Cordelia Deans: The Inter-fraternity Council Award, to the undergraduate who has made the most significant contribution in the areas of leadership, scholarship and service to their individual chapters and the Greek and university communities.

Dorothy Michelle Brackett, daughter of John Brackett: The Paul Debreczeny Prize in Slavic Languages and Literatures, to the graduating senior whose work in Russian language and literature or Slavic linguistics is judged most outstanding.

Sarah Elizabeth Allen, daughter of Mary Godley: The Ria Stambaugh Undergraduate Award for Excellence in German, to the senior with the most distinguished academic record in German language and literature.

James Wellner Doggett, son of John and Audrey Doggett: The L. Richardson Preyer Award for Excellence in Political Science, to a senior judged by a faculty committee to have established the most distinguished record of scholarship in political science and service to the community.

Meredith Austen Flowe, daughter of William and Cheryl Flowe: The Jane Craige Gray Memorial Award, to the junior woman judged most outstanding in character, scholarship and leadership.

Kerri Marie French, daughter of Andrew and Patti French: The Robert B. House Memorial Prize in Poetry, to the graduating senior who has done distinguished work in poetry. This award was presented twice, also to Jennifer Kristen Taylor of Charlotte.

Kasey Q. Maggard, daughter of Patricia Maggard: The Chi Omega Award for Scholarship and Leadership, to the student in Romance languages who is most outstanding in scholastic achievement and exemplary leadership.

Jordan Keith Potter, son of Roger and Teresa Potter: The Earl Slocum Band Award, to the senior member of University Bands who has demonstrated meritorious achievement with regard to musicianship, leadership and academic excellence.

Elizabeth Suzanne Thomasson, daughter of Steven and Suzanne Thomasson: The Undergraduate Prize in Economics, to the undergraduate majoring in economics who is most outstanding in the major and related courses.

Jessica Dee Marks, daughter of Stephen and Patsy Marks: The Robert White Linker Award, to the most outstanding undergraduate residence hall officer, based on leadership, creativity, effectiveness and lasting contributions to the residence living hall.

*Janet Dutton Jackson, wife of Michael Neal and mother of Jeffrey and Katherine Jackson; daughter of John and Pat Dutton of Farmington Hills, Mich.: The McNally Award for Excellence in Geography, to the senior with superior academic performance.

Kings Mountain
David Lyndon Weber Angeles, son of Teresa Angeles: The Ernest L. Mackie Award, to the junior class member judged most outstanding in character, scholarship and leadership. Angeles also recently won one of the nation’s top awards for college students, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship for students committed to careers in public service. Winners of the $30,000 award must have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills and be in the top quarter of their class. Angeles was one of 76 winners among 635 candidates.

Linden
Terri Sue Giles, daughter of Terry Scott and Sue Giles: The James M. Johnston Distinguished Senior Award in the Nursing Program, to the senior student most deserving of recognition for outstanding academic achievement and leadership contributions in the School of Nursing and the Johnston Awards Program.
