NY Times columnist Paul Krugman
discusses the economy and the elections at UNC

CHAPEL HILL -- Paul Krugman, the hard-hitting New York Times columnist, Princeton economist and author, will discuss "The State of the Economy and Its Impact on the Elections of 2004," Monday (April 19) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The free, public lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. in 111 Carroll Hall. Krugman will sign copies of his books after the lecture.

In his provocative opinion-editorial columns for The New York Times, Krugman has been critical of the Bush administration’s domestic and foreign policies and their impact on the economy. Washington Monthly magazine called Krugman the nation’s most important columnist and Editor and Publisher magazine named him the columnist of the year.

A professor of economics at Princeton University, Krugman also has been honored for his expertise on international trade and finance issues. He received the American Economic Association’s John Bates Clark medal and The Economist magazine named him one of the top international economists.

In his newest book, "The Great Unraveling," Krugman says the United States has lost its way, economically and politically, and recommends a road map for getting the country back on track. He discusses recent corporate scandals, the unraveling of the boom economy and the prospects for the future.

"Lively, lucid, witty, superbly informed, Paul Krugman’s commentary on the state of the union is required reading for anyone concerned about the American future," wrote author Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.

Krugman’s lecture is co-sponsored by the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence and the departments of public policy, economics and political science in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Student Congress and the Office of the Provost.

Seating for the lecture is by general admission and guests are encouraged to arrive early. Parking ($1 an hour) is available on campus in the Swain visitor parking lot on Cameron Avenue.
