Ackland Art Museum
CHAPEL HILL – Paintings, drawings, installation and video art by master’s of fine arts students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be displayed from April 18 to May 16 at UNC’s Ackland Art Museum.
"New Currents in Contemporary Art: Master of Fine Arts 2004" will open with a reception on April 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum. The students will be available for questions at a "Meet the Artists" gallery talk at 12:15 p.m. April 28. Both events will be free and open to the public. Admission also is free at the Ackland, open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
"The master of fine arts show always represents a unique opportunity for visitors to the Ackland," said Christine Huber, an assistant curator at the museum. "They can expect to laugh at the wit of some works, be delighted by fairy tales, sit and think, puzzle over a maze, be awed by an installation and come away thinking that the students have taken good advantage of their education."
The nine students with work in the exhibit are Wendy Aracich of Altamont Springs, Fla.; Mark Bradley-Shoup of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Kyle Bravo of Baton Rouge, La.; Corey Drieth of Fort Collins, Colo.; Nicole Jean Hill of Sylvania, Ohio; Ava Johnson of Chicago; Allyson Mellberg Taylor of Milwaukee; Nathaniel Quinn of Chapel Hill and Claire Rau of Hilton Head, S.C.
Although the 40 to 50 works displayed will feature many different themes, Taylor said, visitors should look for similarities in the art: "As different as we are, we seem to bleed into each others’ edges," she said.
The Ackland is on South Columbia Street near Franklin Street. For more information, call 919-966-5736 or 919-962-0837 (TTY), or visit the Web site at www.ackland.org.
