101 UNC-Chapel Hill students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest of four in the state, has marked its 100th year and inducted 101 new members.

Dr. John Churchill, national secretary for Phi Beta Kappa, spoke at the spring induction ceremony on April 5 for the chapter, Alpha of North Carolina

"The Phi Beta Kappa chapter here has been, for a century, an important advocate for the liberal arts and sciences at one of the nation's great universities," Churchill said. "We are pleased to join with the University of North Carolina in recognizing 100 years of dedication to the liberal arts and sciences by Phi Beta Kappa on this campus."

Each new member received a Phi Beta Kappa key, the organization’s symbol.

A student who has completed 75 hours of course work and has a grade-point average of 3.85 (on a 4-point scale) or better is eligible for membership, said chapter secretary and faculty adviser Dr. Thomas Warburton, a music professor. Also eligible is any student who has completed 105 hours of course work and has a 3.75 grade-point average. Grades earned at other universities are not considered.

"Less than 1 percent of all college graduates qualify to be members," Warburton said.

Past and present Phi Beta Kappa members from across the country have included six American presidents, 12 Supreme Court Justices and numerous artistic, intellectual and political leaders, Warburton said.

Each year, the 262 Phi Beta Kappa chapters nationwide and alumni associations across the country raise and distribute more than $1 million in awards, scholarships and prizes benefiting high school and college students, Warburton said.

Phi Beta Kappa officers at Carolina for 2003-2004 are students Charlene Wong, president; Craig Baden, vice president; and Catherine Duncan, recording secretary.
