Leading scientists to gather at UNC
for cancer symposium May 11, 12
CHAPEL HILL -- Leading scientists in the fields of biochemistry, structural biology, cell biology, animal models and human diseases will gather at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill May 11 and 12 for a symposium on DNA and cancer.
UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s 29th Annual Scientific Symposium, "Genomic Instability and Cancer Progression," will be held at UNC’s William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. Symposium sessions will highlight the increasing understanding of the mechanisms that prevent efficient DNA repair and cause cancers first to originate and then to progress.
All sessions are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is recommended. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. May 11. Dr. H. Shelton Earp, UNC Lineberger director, and symposium co-chair Dr. Beverly Mitchell, who is professor of medicine at UNC and UNC Lineberger associate director, will begin the symposium by welcoming participants and giving introductory remarks at 8:45 a.m. that day.
Researchers from institutions throughout the country will participate in the event. Sponsors are UNC Lineberger; the UNC School of Medicine departments of biochemistry and biophysics, cell and developmental biology, cell and molecular physiology, dermatology, genetics, medicine, microbiology and immunology, neurology, pathology and laboratory medicine, pharmacology, radiation oncology, radiology and surgery; and the UNC College of Arts and Sciences departments of biology and chemistry. The lead corporate sponsor is the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of Research Triangle Park. Additional support has been provided by: Amgen, Applied Biosystems, Celgene Corp., Chemicon, Corning, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Labrepco, Stratagene and Upstate.
