CHAPEL HILL -- Stuart Eizenstat, former deputy secretary of the treasury and an expert on Holocaust restitution issues, is among the distinguished speakers in the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies Inaugural Lecture Series at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The series begins Sept. 23 and continues throughout the academic year with a total of six free, public lectures.
Eizenstat will present the Kaplan-Brauer Lecture on the Contribution of Judaism to Civilization during the spring semester on a date to be announced later. A 1964 Carolina alumnus, Eizenstat will draw from his book, "Imperfect Justice," to discus the political and ethical issues raised by the legal and diplomatic efforts to acquire more than $8 billion in compensation from Swiss, German, Austrian and French companies. A former ambassador to the European Union, he is currently a partner in the law firm of Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C. Eizenstat gave UNC’s 2000 commencement address and received an honorary doctor of law degree.
Other lectures in the series are as follows:
The Carolina Center for Jewish Studies, based in the College of Arts and Sciences, was established a year ago to provide scholarly understanding of Judaism and the historic Jewish experience. The center brings together scholars from a range of academic departments including English, Germanic languages, history, political science, religious studies and Slavic languages and literatures.
The lectures are co-sponsored by the Curriculum in American Studies, the Center for the Study of the American South, the Department of Religious Studies and North Carolina Hillel.
