Electrical contractor dies
in accident at Kenan Stadium
CHAPEL HILL - A contract worker died just before noon today (Aug. 9) at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Leland S. Williams, 31, of Burlington and his co-workers of Kemco of Burlington
Inc. were working in UNC's Kenan Memorial Stadium at the time of the accident,
according to UNC Police.
The workers were replacing light fixtures and bulbs on banks of field lights,
UNC officials said. The job began in mid-summer and was scheduled to be completed
by the end of August.
Williams died of electrocution at the scene, said UNC Police. Officials from
the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the university's Division
of Environmental Health and Safety and UNC police are investigating the accident.
Also responding to the scene were units from the Chapel Hill Fire Department,
the North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, Orange County Emergency Management
and South Orange Rescue.
