Mozart, jazz, percussion concerto
among fall music events at UNC

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill music department will offer performances this fall ranging from Mozart to jazz, and from a percussion concerto to a student-produced comic opera.

The department's 2006-2007 season will begin with September Prelude, the Triangle's annual Festival of Chamber Music. Presented by UNC, Duke Performances and the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, the festival will feature performances from Sept. 8-10 in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

UNC's installment, on Sept. 9, will feature Chapel Hill native and violinist Jennifer Curtis and, from the North Carolina Symphony, principal harpist Anita Burroughs-Price and principal cellist Bonnie Thron.

Faculty musicians from UNC and East Carolina University will join them in a recital of music by composers Fauré, Debussy and Ravel. General admission tickets for the 8 p.m. concert in Memorial Hall are $15 for the public, $10 for UNC students, faculty and staff. Call the Memorial Hall box office at (919) 843-3333.

"Our new concert season showcases the best of our faculty, students and guests in a wide range of classical music and jazz," said Dr. Tim Carter, music department professor and chair.

"I can't wait to hear my colleague Lynn Glassock's new percussion concerto. I am delighted to welcome our new voice teachers Jeanne Fischer and Valentin Lanzrein, and any student group that can produce Mozart's wonderful comic opera, 'Così fan tutte,' deserves high praise indeed."
Tickets for music department events at Memorial Hall are sold at the all box office on Cameron Avenue, (919) 843-3333. Tickets for all other events are available at the door or by calling the department office at (919) 962-1039.

Evening concerts will start at 7:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with some exceptions. Check the Web site or local calendar listings for updated information, or call (919) 962-1039.

Fall season highlights will include:

• Sept. 8, 8 p.m.: Dr. Johan Fröst, solo piano recital. The piano department chair at Kapellsberg Musikskola in Harnosand, Sweden, Fröst has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Canada. Scandinavia, England, Germany, Spain and Russia. Known for his recordings of Rachmaninov and Stravinsky, he founded the Mimir Chamber Music Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, and has won first prize in the Scandinavian Piano Competition and the St. Charles International Piano Competition in Chicago. Hill Hall Auditorium. Free.
  
  
• Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m.: Carolina Wind Quintet. UNC faculty musicians and guests perform in a special Scholarship Benefit Concert, with proceeds going toward student music scholarships. Hill Hall Auditorium. General admission, tickets $15 ($10, UNC students, faculty and staff).
  
  
• Oct. 6, 8 p.m.: John Perry, piano. Internationally known master teacher and pianist John Perry performs the works of Brahms, Debussy and Keats. Hill Hall Auditorium. General admission, tickets $15, ($10, UNC students, faculty and staff). Master classes Oct. 7, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., Hill Hall Auditorium.
  
  
• Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m.: UNC Symphony Orchestra. World premiere of music professor Lynn Glassock's Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra; Shostakovich Symphony No. 6. Memorial Hall. General admission, tickets $15, ($10, UNC students, faculty and staff).
  
  
• Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.: The Lynn Seaton Trio. Jazz by Lynn Seaton of the University of North Texas on bass; UNC music faculty member Stephen Anderson on piano; and New York jazz drummer Drori Mondlak. Hill Hall Auditorium. Free.
  
  
• Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m.: The Brentano String Quartet with Mayron Tsong, piano. Dr. Tsong, a UNC music faculty member, performs with the string quartet, in residence in the department for 2006-2007. Memorial Hall. Information and tickets, (919) 843-3333.
  
  
• Nov. 12, 3 p.m.: "Our Favorite Mozart," part of the William S. Newman Artists Series. Concert by UNC music faculty members Dr. Jeanne Fischer, soprano; Dr. Valentin Lanzrein, bass; Dr. Richard Luby, violin; Dr. Thomas Otten, piano; Hugh Partridge, viola; and Brent Wissick, cello. Hill Hall Auditorium. General admission, tickets $15, ($10, UNC students, faculty and staff).
  
  
• Nov. 28 and 29, 7:30 p.m.: Mozart's "Così fan tutte." UNC Opera and UNC Symphony Orchestra present Mozart's famous opera. Memorial Hall. General admission, tickets $15, ($10, UNC students, faculty and staff).

In a look ahead, the 2007 Carolina Jazz Festival will offer a broad range of performances from Feb. 28 to March 3.
