German trio, Carolina Choir, others vary UNC’s music lineup
CHAPEL HILL — Hear French chamber music, jazz, symphonies and many other incarnations of sound during the 2007-2008 season of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill music department.
Glee clubs, opera vocalists, wind ensembles and more will perform throughout the academic year.
The season officially kicks off with September Prelude, the Triangle’s annual Festival of Chamber Music. The collaboration among area music groups including the UNC music department features performances in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.
The UNC performance this year features Germany’s acclaimed Abegg Trio performing the complete Beethoven Trios for violin, cello and piano on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Tickets are $10 for UNC students, faculty and staff, $15 for others.
Tickets for music department events in Memorial Hall are now sold at the Memorial Hall Box Office on Cameron Avenue, (919) 843-3333, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.
The department, a part of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, will host more than 100 events from September through April in Hill Hall Auditorium, Memorial Hall and other campus venues. The complete season calendar, to be updated regularly, is available at the music department Web site, http://music.unc.edu, and (919) 962-1039. Evening concerts will start at 7:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with some exceptions.
“Yet again, in our 2007-2008 concert series, we break new ground,” said Tim Carter, Ph.D., David G. Frey distinguished professor and music department chair. “A new song cycle by my colleague Allen Anderson is something to look forward to, as is our symphony orchestra tackling one of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire, Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie Fantastique.’
“We open up new worlds of sound with our spring 2008 Festival on the Hill, featuring the music of Latin America and including a new commission by Tana León, one of the most thrilling composers of our time.”
Fall season highlights will include:
The 2008 Carolina Jazz Festival will take place from Feb. 27 to March 1. Details will be announced early next semester.
