UNC offering shelter, hot meals, hot showers to community

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Woollen Gym has opened its doors to community members who wish to make use of shower facilities or use the facility as a shelter.

Individuals who wish to make use of the shower facilities should bring their own towels and other bath supplies, university officials said. Those wishing to take shelter there should bring their blankets and pillows.

Parking will be available in the Bell Tower lot off South Road; signs will be posted and officers available to direct people to parking. Shuttle service will be available from the lot to the gym. Woollen Gym is located on South Road just past the intersection with Raleigh Road.

The shelter, which the university has coordinated opening today with the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross, will remain open as long as there is a need, officials said.

In addition, the university will be selling hot meals to members of the community through the weekend: Chase Dining Hall (located in Chase Hall on south campus) and Top of Lenoir (located in Lenoir Hall near the Frank Porter Graham Student Union) will be selling hot meals to members of the community from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today (Dec. 6), and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 7) and Sunday (Dec. 8).

Lunch prices are $6.95, and dinner prices are $7.50.
