CHAPEL HILL -- "Under a Winter Moon" will be the theme at the 10th annual "Winter Stories" program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Wilson Library. Storytelling, folk music and poetry all will be part of the free public event Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m., with refreshments served beginning at 5 p.m.

Children of all ages are invited to the program, said Liza Terll of Friends of the Library, which will sponsor the program.

Poet and UNC biology library assistant Jeffrey Beam, participating for the 10th year in a row, has collected stories, songs and poems for the program throughout the year, Terll said. Beam has written nine poetry books, including "An Elizabethan Bestiary: Retold."

Terry Rollins, a professional storyteller since 1991, also will participate. He has shared traditional folklore, ghost stories, Native American legends and original stories with audiences from the Southeast to Canada. Rollins, formerly with UNC's planning library, is president of the North Carolina Storytelling Guild.

UNC library employees Kate Barnhart and Jill Shires will play guitar, dulcimer and flute. Barnhart, of the library development office, performs in the Pittsboro group Divas and Dave. Shires, a music catalog librarian, played flute on the Tam's hit "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am?"

Friends of the Library promotes awareness of and interest in UNC libraries and encourages donations to the libraries. University librarian Louis Round Wilson started the group in 1932 to promote growth of library collections.
