Emory Chamber Music Society to perform at UNC-Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL -- The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta, hailed as the best chamber music group in the city by Atlanta Magazine, will perform at 8 p.m. March 2 in Hill Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chamber works by Beethoven and Schumann, as well as Dohnányi's Sextet in C major, will be performed in the concert, part of the 10th annual William S. Newman Artists Series.

The society, the resident professional performing group of Emory University, comprises principal players from the Atlanta symphony orchestra and members of Emory's music faculty, said David Arons, series coordinator.

With a core membership of seven performers, the society offers a diverse repertoire ranging from duos to large ensemble works with a variety of instrumentation. Additional performers, as demanded by different concert programs, are drawn from a pool of Atlanta’s outstanding musicians.

Guest artists have included cellist Yo-Yo Ma, guitarist Eliot Fisk, pianist Robert Spano and members of numerous string quartets. The society made New York and Boston debuts in 1996 and also has appeared on syndicated radio broadcasts.

Besides performing, the society commissions new works and participates in community outreach activities. Society members also coach student chamber music ensembles at Emory and give private lessons.

The Newman series honors the late William S. Newman, pianist and distinguished music professor at UNC from 1945 to 1977. Tickets – $15 for the public, $12 for seniors and $5 for students – can be purchased in 105 Hill Hall or at the concert. Free parking will be reserved for concert-goers in the Swain lot off Cameron Avenue behind Hill Hall. Call the music department at 962-1039 for more information.
