'Changing Face of Mexico' topic of Feb. 10 lecture in Charlotte

CHAPEL HILL -- Sharon Mújica of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will discuss "The Changing Face of Mexico" in a free public talk Feb. 10 in Charlotte.

Mújica, outreach director of the Consortium in Latin American Studies at UNC and Duke University, will speak at 7 p.m. at Providence Day School, 5800 Sardis Road. Reservations are required one week in advance, by Monday (Feb. 3). Call (704) 887-7006 for reservations, information and directions.

Mújica organizes activities including workshops for North Carolina educators and an annual Latin American film festival held at seven North Carolina colleges and universities. Through the UNC Summer School, she takes a group of students and faculty to Yucatán, Mexico, each summer. Mújica also administers a program of language instruction in Yucatec Maya, an indigenous Mexican language -- a field component of the course. Before coming to UNC in the early 1990s, Mújica lived and worked in Mexico for 20 years.

The lecture was arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC. The outreach program brings more than 90 faculty members to business, civic and community groups across the state. The speakers share their expertise on more than 150 topics, including 46 that focus on North Carolina and the South.
