CHAPEL HILL – Soprano Christine Schadeberg will perform music by composers including Rachmaninoff, Debussy and Ives Sunday (Jan. 26) in the fourth concert of this year's William S. Newman Artists Series at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Pianist Christopher Oldfather will accompany Schadeberg in the concert, set to begin at 3 p.m. in UNC’s Hill Hall Auditorium. Music will include selections from Rachmaninoff's Opus 26 (1906-1907); Debussy's "Fêtes Galantes II" (1904); Arnold Schoenberg's "Brettl-Lieder" (1901); and the body of work by Charles Ives (1874-1954).
Both musicians have made recital debuts in Carnegie Hall, Schadeberg singing Mozart's "Requiem." She also has performed at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and with chamber ensembles and orchestras across the United States and Europe. She has recorded on labels including Opus One, Bridge and Orion Master Recordings.
A critic for the Dallas Morning News called Schadeberg "the always amazing soprano … who deals with the complexities of contemporary music with extraordinary naturalness, certainty and expression."
Oldfather, a founding member of the Andreas Piano Trio, has performed with the Juilliard String Quartet and soloed with the New York Philharmonic. He also has performed across the country and internationally, playing keyboards ranging from harpsichord to sampled percussion. His recording of Elliott Carter’s "Duo for Violin & Piano" with Robert Mann was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1990.
The UNC music department dedicates the concert series to the memory of William S. Newman (1912-2000), pianist and distinguished music professor at UNC from 1945 to 1977. Tickets, on sale in 105 Hill Hall (962-1039), are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. Free parking will be available in the Swain lot off Cameron Avenue, behind Hill Hall.
