Gene Nichol, UNC law school dean, to discuss civil liberties, judicial power

CHAPEL HILL -- Gene Nichol, dean of the law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will speak on "Civil Liberties and Federal Judicial Power" Feb. 5 in Chapel Hill.

The free public talk will be at 1:30 p.m. in the lower level lecture hall at Carolina Meadows, a retirement community off Mt. Carmel Church Road. Reservations, required for non-Carolina Meadows residents, are due by Wednesday (Jan. 29). Call 942-4014 or 967-7892.

Nichol, the Burton Craige professor of law, teaches courses on constitutional law, federal courts, political reform and civil rights. Formerly law school dean at the University of Colorado-Boulder, he also has taught at the College of William and Mary and Oxford and West Virginia universities.

He has published numerous articles and essays and testified before Congressional and state legislative committees.

The talks were arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC, an outreach program that began in 1993. More than 90 faculty members share their expertise with community, civic and business groups across the state. The speakers lecture on more than 150 topics, including 46 that focus on North Carolina and the South.
