CHAPEL HILL -- The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will offer a creative writing workshop with N.C. writer Michael Chitwood.
The workshop will be held Mondays Feb. 2 through April 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Chitwood is a visiting lecturer in the creative writing program at UNC and recipient of the 2003 Roanoke-Chowan Award for "Gospel Road Going." He has written four poetry collections and a book of essays, and his work has appeared in several national publications.
The workshop is designed for writers with works-in-progress. Class sessions will provide opportunities to revise and refine works in a supportive environment with the help of an experienced writer. Sessions will consider both poetry and prose and will devote time for review of works by well-known writers and class participants.
Mary Morrison, continuing education specialist at the Friday Center, said the center is pleased to offer the course again.
"The participants in the first workshop were so impressed with the amount of time and attention Michael Chitwood devoted to each of them," Morrison said. "He was extremely thorough in reading and critiquing each student’s work. We are just thrilled that he agreed to teach it a second time."
Class size is limited to 16 participants. Registrations received before Jan. 16 cost $750 and $775 afterward. Registration is available online at http://fridaycenter.unc.edu/cni/cww.htm. For more information on the program or registration, contact Morrison at (919) 843-4483 or mmorriso@email.unc.edu.
