Events accompanying photography exhibit
to be held at UNC’s Ackland, Duke center
CHAPEL HILL – The following events, all free and open to the public, will accompany the exhibition of photographs by Sebastião Salgado, "Migrations: Humanity in Transition" and "The Children."
The exhibition will be displayed Feb. 1 through March 28 at the Ackland Art Museum of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
Events will be at the Ackland, on South Columbia Street near Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, and at the center, at 1317 W. Pettigrew St., off Swift Avenue in Durham. Paid parking for the Ackland is available in the Swain lot off Cameron Avenue; parking is available behind the center.
Feb. 1, opening receptions, 3-5 p.m., the Ackland and 1-5 p.m., Center for Documentary Studies.
Feb. 19, 7 p.m., Center for Documentary Studies. First of two panel discussions, "Regarding the Pain of Others," on documentary practices, ethics and ethos, and their implications in Salgado’s work. Panelists will include:
· Satendra Khanna, associate professor of the practice, Asian & African languages and literature, Duke;
· Mel Rosenthal, photographer and distinguished professor of art and director of photography programs at Empire State College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and
· Hong-An Truong, photographer and visual arts educator at the Center for Documentary Studies.
Feb. 22, 3 p.m., Ackland: Local residents tell their stories of immigration to the Triangle in "My Personal Experience: Stories Through the Eyes of People Recently Arrived."
Feb. 29, 3-4:30 p.m., Ackland: Second panel discussion on "Regarding the Pain of Others," about documentary practices, ethics and ethos, and their implications in Salgado’s work. Barbara Matilsky, curator of exhibitions at the Ackland, will moderate the discussion. Panelists will include:
· Richard Beckman, photographer and professor of journalism and mass communication at UNC, head of the visual communication sequence in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication;
· Patrick Davison, photographer and assistant professor of journalism and mass communication, UNC;
· elin o’Hara slavick, artist, photographer and associate professor of art at UNC;
· Timothy Riggs, curator of collections at the Ackland; and
· Laena Wilder, photographer.
March 2, 7 p.m. Center for Documentary Studies, auditorium: Film "The Spectre of Hope: With Sebastião Salgado and John Berger." John Leonard of New York magazine wrote that the film presents "both a remarkable conversation between Brazilian economist-photographer Sebastião Salgado and British art critic and novelist John Berger and a stunning portrait (in Salgado’s pictures) of what globalization really looks like in Rwanda, Mexico, Mozambique, Sudan and erstwhile Yugoslavia."
March 24, 6-8 p.m., Ackland: "Student Voices in Response to Salgado." Students present research on the Salgado exhibition from anthropological, geographical and literary points of view. A reception will follow. The event will be sponsored by the Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence at UNC.
March 25, Time to be announced, Center for Documentary Studies, Kreps and Lyndhurst galleries: "Student Voices in Response to Salgado." Student present research on the Salgado exhibition from various documentary points of view. A reception will follow.
