Grants available for youth civic education programs
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Civic Education Consortium, a statewide partnership based in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Government, is seeking grant applications from organizations working to develop effective citizenship among North Carolina’s children and youth. Since 1998, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem has provided funding for the program.
Consortium officials are especially interested in funding programs that directly involve youth in local government or service-based programs and collaborative projects between school and community organizations. The consortium will award grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Over the past five years, the consortium has awarded grants totaling $227,000 to 37 programs across the state, reaching nearly 40,000 young people.
For an application or additional information, contact Leslie Anderson (lesliea@ioa.com or 828-252-4913). You may also download an application form or find further information about the consortium online at www.civics.org. Applications are due by Sept. 29.
Consortium, a program of UNC’s School of Government, includes more than 190 partner organizations. The consortium provides support to school-based and community-based civics-related programs across the state and welcomes individuals and organizations concerned about civic education to join as partners at no cost.
The UNC School of Government provides training, consulting, publications and other services for public officials across the state to improve the quality of state and local government.
