CHAPEL HILL -- Carl Matheson of Hickory, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Southwood Furniture Corp., has been installed as chair of the Board of Directors for the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Matheson, a native of Taylorsville who graduated from UNC in 1957, has served the university and other state programs in a variety of roles over the years. He has twice served on the UNC Board of Visitors and has chaired Morehead Foundation selection committees at county and regional levels. He also has been a member of the UNC Educational Foundation’s executive committee.
"Carl Matheson’s endless good humor, conscientiousness, passion for our university and commitment to our association will assure continuing strong volunteer leadership for the General Alumni Association," said Douglas S. Dibbert, president of the UNC General Alumni Association.
In Catawba County, Matheson is a former president of the Hickory Rotary Club and the United Way and a member of the Jaycees and Chamber of Commerce. He also has directed fund-raising efforts for Catawba County public education. He is president of the Hambrick Memorial Foundation, a philanthropic organization. As a UNC student, he was a member of the Philanthropic Society and Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Matheson took office at the association’s recent annual alumni luncheon in Chapel Hill. His term will end in May 2004. The General Alumni Association is a self-governed, nonprofit organization serving alumni and friends of UNC.
