Robertson grants to fund service, research
more by Duke, UNC collaborators
CHAPEL HILL – A fund-raising climb up Mount Mitchell; helping a camp for children whose parents are battling cancer; even ballroom dances on rival campuses.
These projects will be among 24 carried out in 2005-2006 by collaborators from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.
Besides the students, faculty and staff from both campuses who will lead the projects, others from the two schools will participate in them together.
The projects were funded recently with more than $45,000 from the Robertson Program, which works to strengthen ties between the two universities. The program also funds four-year merit-based scholarships to students who study on both campuses. This marks the fifth year of grants from the program’s Robertson Collaboration Fund.
"As always, the selection committee was impressed with the array of collaborative ideas, ranging from scientific research to academic opportunities to community outreach," said Dr. Eric Mlyn, program director. "We were also glad to see that faculty, staff and students of both universities presented these ideas."
To be eligible for a Robertson grant, a project must have at least one applicant each from Duke and UNC. Priority is given to projects that can make lasting impacts on the two communities and further collaboration between them. The program was founded in 2000 with a $24 million gift from 1955 UNC graduate Julian Robertson and his wife, Josie Robertson, of New York. Their gift supports both the scholarships and the grants. Each year, 15 students from each university’s incoming class are selected as Robertson Scholars.
