Dogwood parking deck opens on UNC-CH’s South Campus

CHAPEL HILL -- The first phase of the Dogwood parking deck on the South Campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill opened its gates to motorists last Saturday (July 24).

As a result of the deck’s opening, the road formerly known as East Drive -- located to the east of the Cardinal parking deck across from UNC Hospitals -- has been closed, and traffic is no longer permitted between the Dogwood and Cardinal decks.

All traffic traveling north toward Manning Drive from Mason Farm Road -- including UNC Hospitals shuttles and Chapel Hill Transit bus service -- has been re-routed to the newly-constructed East Drive, located just east of the new deck.

Pedestrians can access Manning Drive by walking through one of the existing decks, or along sidewalks on West and the new East drives.

UNC-CH Department of Public Safety Director Derek Poarch said, "The Dogwood deck reflects our commitment to the mission of the university and UNC Hospitals. It is our sincere hope that this project culminates in both greater access for employees and greater convenience for visitors and patients to the campus and, in particular, to medical facilities."

This first phase of the Dogwood deck will add 949 spaces to the number set aside for visitors and patients on South Campus.

Valet parking and some visitor and patient parking still will be available in the original Cardinal deck, although most spaces there will convert to reserved employee PD permit holder parking.

Hospital shuttle stops are located at the corner of West Drive and Mason Farm Road; on Mason Farm Road across from the Cardinal deck (Health Affairs I); along the loop drive just to either side of UNC Hospitals’ main entrance; and along the new East Drive.

Upon completion of the Dogwood deck next year, employee parking on South Campus will increase by 1,103 spaces, and another 650 spaces for visitors and patients will be added.

Construction of the Dogwood deck began in summer 1997, and was scheduled to open in two phases. The section that just opened constitutes the northern half of the deck. The entire deck is tentatively scheduled to be completed by Fall 2000.
