Overlock named co-chair of Carolina First Campaign

CHAPEL HILL -- Mike Overlock of Greenwich, Conn., has been named co-chair of the $1.8 billion Carolina First Campaign. Overlock joins co-chairs Paul Fulton of Winston-Salem and Charles M. Shaffer Jr. of Atlanta in leading the multi-year fund-raising drive.

"Adding Mike as a co-chair gives the campaign a stronger presence in the Northeastern U.S. and gives us the benefit of his vast business and volunteer fund-raising experience," said Matt Kupec, the university’s vice chancellor for advancement and director of Carolina First.

Overlock said this was an important and exciting time for the university. "We are calling on all alumni and friends to help build our endowment and enhance our operating funds to ensure that Carolina is recognized as the nation’s leading public university."

Carolina First is a comprehensive, multi-year private fund-raising campaign to support Carolina’s vision of becoming the nation’s leading public university.

Overlock joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1973 and was elected partner in 1982. He headed the firm’s Mergers and Acquisition Department from 1985 to 1996. Overlock served on the Management Committee and was co-head of the Investment Banking Division from 1990 to 1996. He became a limited partner of the firm in 1996 and senior director in 1999.

Overlock serves on the 50-member Carolina First steering committee. He served on the campaign cabinet charged with planning and setting goals for Carolina First and chaired that group’s budget committee.

Overlock is vice chairman of Carolina’s Arts and Sciences Foundation, a member of the board of overseers of the Columbia Graduate School of Business and a trustee of the Kent School. He chaired the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and was a member of its board from 1992 to 1998.

Overlock received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Carolina in 1968 and an MBA from Columbia in 1973. He served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. He and his wife, Trina, have three children, one of whom is a UNC graduate.
