UNC’s Women’s Week 2003 to feature Elaine Marshall, workshops, performers

CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall will give keynote remarks Monday (March 24) to launch this year’s Women’s Week at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Also speaking at the kick-off reception, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, will be Katherine Harrelson of the N.C. Council for Women’s Domestic Violence Commission.

Women members of the N.C. General Assembly are invited to the reception, titled "Many Women, Many Ways to Serve," and designed to honor women in public service.

This year’s Women’s Week, with more than 40 performances, talks and workshops Saturday (March 22) through March 30, will feature the theme "Express Yourself: Many Women, Many Voices." The Carolina Women’s Center at UNC and other campus groups will sponsor the events, all free and open to the public.

Highlights will include the traditional Take Back the Night March from 7-10 p.m. March 26, beginning and ending in the Pit, outside the student union. On March 27, hip-hop poet jessica Care moore and comedian Kate Rigg will present "Spoken Word and Comedy," from 8-10:30 p.m. in the union film auditorium. moore won for five straight weeks on the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night.

"Women’s Week 2003 brightens the campus with events that range from health care to poetry and faith," said Diane Kjervik, center director. "We invite everyone who cares about the well-being of women to join us as we celebrate women who shape the world with their talent, laughter and political presence."

Student groups ranging from Guerilla Theater to the Loreleis will perform from noon to 1 p.m. Monday (March 24) in the Pit to celebrate the week’s theme.
