34 N.C. high school seniors win prestigious Morehead Awards

CHAPEL HILL -- Thirty-four high school seniors from across North Carolina are among 70 students to win 1999 Morehead Awards to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The $53,000 scholarships pay all expenses for four years of undergraduate study and a summer enrichment program.

Winners were announced today (March 5) by the John Motley Morehead Foundation trustees. They were selected following a nomination and interview process that began last fall with nearly 1,000 candidates and concluded with interviews in Chapel Hill Feb. 27 - March 2. The 125 finalists interviewed were from North Carolina, 23 other states, the District of Columbia and Great Britain.

Among the largest and most competitive undergraduate scholarships in the United States, the Morehead Award was the first non-athletic merit-based scholarship in the country and was patterned after the Rhodes Scholarship awarded for graduate work at England's Oxford University. It is designed to attract student-leaders to UNC-CH, where, once enrolled, they are expected to make significant contributions to the university community in their areas of talent and interest.

An extensive summer enrichment program complements each scholar's classwork with hands-on leadership and problem-solving experiences in four areas: outdoor leadership, public service, enterprise, and travel and study abroad.

The selection process began in September when top, well-rounded students were nominated, regardless of their interest in attending UNC-CH. Criteria are academic achievement, leadership, moral force of character and physical vigor. Recipients are chosen by merit and achievement, not financial need.

The Morehead program was begun in 1951 by the late John Motley Morehead III, an 1891 UNC-CH graduate. More than 2,200 scholars have attended Carolina, and 227 now are studying on campus.
