Saturday community forum to focus on challenges, strengths of Hispanic community

CHAPEL HILL -- Community members, leaders and service providers are invited to participate in Accion Latina!, a community forum for the Hispanic communities in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, to be held Saturday (May 3) at Chapel Hill’s Lincoln Center.

The forum will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; participants will discuss the challenges faced by the Hispanic community, as well as possible solutions for issues related to education, recreation, health, transportation and working conditions. The event also will feature music and refreshments.

Accion Latina! resulted from a participatory needs assessment of Carrboro’s Hispanic community conducted by five University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health graduate students. The students, studying in the department of health behavior and health education, interviewed community members, service providers and leaders to collect opinions about the quality of life for Hispanics in Carrboro and what needs exist for the community. Results of the assessment will be presented at the forum and will be available this summer on the Town of Carrboro’s Web site.

Child care and activities will be provided for participants. Transportation also is available. The Lincoln Center is located at 750 S. Merritt Mill Road.

For more information or to request transportation, call (919) 966-3919, ext. 3, and leave a message or e-mail Kristen Stoimenoff at stoimeno@email.unc.edu.
