Two new Morehead Scholars
named to UNC freshman class
CHAPEL HILL - Trustees of the John Motley Morehead Foundation have announced
two more winners of 2006 Morehead Scholarships to the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill.
The selections finalized the class of 49 freshman scholars who will enroll this
fall. The full, four-year merit scholarship is valued at approximately $80,000
for each in-state student and $140,000 for each out-of-state recipient.
The new winners are:
Recipients are chosen by merit and accomplishments, not financial need. Selection
criteria are leadership, academic achievement, moral force of character and
physical vigor.
Approximately 1,620 high school seniors nationwide and in Great Britain were
nominated by their high schools or applied for the Morehead last fall. Winners
announced in March had until April 14 to accept the Morehead. Final awards for
the freshman class were made to 50 students, but 49 will be on campus this fall
after the following changes.
Two of this year's recipients will take what is called a gap year during 2006-2007
then enroll in 2007: Ronald Jayson Nemeyer of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gregory
Richard Smith of Charlotte.
Helen Elizabeth ("Haley") Koch of Cabin John, Md., who was awarded
the Morehead in spring 2005, took a gap year in 2005-2006, volunteering in an
orphanage in South Africa and traveling the African continent. She will begin
her freshman year at UNC this fall. For more information and a list of the scholars
