Local winners of college preparation network competition honored

CHAPEL HILL -- Seventy-five Orange and Durham County middle and high school students enrolled in a college preparedness program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently won awards in a math and science competition.

The students belong to the UNC-CH Center for Mathematics and Science Education's Pre-College Program, which seeks to increase the number of students who study math and science at college and then pursue careers in science, math, technical fields, engineering and education. The center is based in the UNC-CH School of Education.

The center's Pre-College Program encourages students in grades 6 through 12 to attend enrichment activities in math and science; offers students individualized tutoring, career counseling and hands-on field trips and weekend and summer educational opportunities; encourages parents to become more involved in their child's education; and teaches classroom instructors new skills for attracting more students to science and math courses.

The Mathematics and Science Education Network is a statewide science and math enrichment program offered at 11 of the state's 16 UNC campuses. Within the network, there are six Pre-College Programs at UNC-CH, N.C. State University, Elizabeth City State University, UNC-Charlotte, Fayetteville State University and N.C. A & T University. A total of 460 students from the six Pre-College Programs participated in the network's competition held April 18 at Fayetteville. Of the 75 students from UNC-CH's program, 53 took home awards.
