157 UNC-CH students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

CHAPEL HILL -- Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s highest academic honorary society, inducted 157 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students during its fall ceremony Nov. 20. UNC-CH Chancellor James Moeser spoke at the ceremony in Chapel Hill.

Phi Beta Kappa is open to undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences and professional degree programs who meet stringent academic requirements.

For early admission, a student in the college must have completed at least 75 graded hours of UNC-CH academic course work -- not including physical education -- with at least a 3.75 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale).

For admission as a senior, a student must have completed at least 105 hours -- not including physical education -- with a 3.65 average. Those hours must include at least 45 graded (not pass/fail) hours taken at UNC-CH. Grades earned at other universities are not considered in figuring averages.

An undergraduate in a professional program may apply if he or she has completed at least 105 academic hours, including at least 90 hours in the College of Arts and Sciences or the equivalent in transfer work from other universities. The student must have a 3.65 average for the 105 hours and

have taken at least 45 graded hours at UNC-CH.
