UNC faculty members to speak to three local groups in December

CHAPEL HILL -- Three University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty members will speak locally in December as part of the university's Carolina Speakers program. The free public talks will be:

Associate professor of history Dr. Sarah Shields will discuss the "Arab-Israeli Conflict" at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 4) at the Carolina Meadows retirement community. Call 942-4014 for reservations, information and directions. Shields, also on the women’s studies faculty, teaches courses on the modern Middle East, women in the Middle East and Islamic civilization. Her current research is on the creation of national identities in the Middle East between the world wars.

Dr. Charles "Terry" Zug, professor emeritus of English and former chair of the folklore curriculum, will discuss "Down Home: North Carolina Architecture" at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro St., Carrboro. Reservations are required at least a day in advance for the talk, part of the Carrboro Parks and Recreation Department’s "Breakfast with an Expert" series. Call 918-7385 for reservations, information and directions. Zug has studied North Carolina architecture and folk art for 25 years. He wrote "Turners and Burners: The Folk Potters of North Carolina," which explores one of the state’s indigenous art forms.

Psychoanalyst Dr. Clay Whitehead will discuss psychotherapy at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill. Whitehead will speak as part of the "Issues of Today" series hosted by Peer Learning, a group of retired professionals. The talk is open to members only, but new members may join at the meeting. Reservations are not required. Call 919-962-1993 for information and directions. A trustee of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, Whitehead focuses on the art and science of psychotherapy, the history of medicine and mythology. In 1985, he was elected a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
