N.C. jazz orchestra to swing in 
holiday season Dec. 9 at UNC

CHAPEL HILL — The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra will swing into the holiday season on Dec. 9 in Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The orchestra will perform holiday classics as they were recorded by the Glenn Miller and Stan Kenton orchestras, as well as the Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker."

The 8 p.m. concert will be part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.

The orchestra performs classic jazz and big band music — uniquely American art forms that rarely are presented outside major metropolitan areas.

Led by James Ketch, professor of music and director of jazz studies at UNC, the orchestra features the state’s finest jazz musicians, many of them educators at North Carolina universities.

Besides its active concert schedule, the orchestra maintains a strong presence in jazz education, offering clinics and programs across North Carolina.

Jazz master Wynton Marsalis once said, "(The NCJRO represents) an important development in the jazz world. I warmly welcome it."

Single tickets are $5 for Carolina students, $12 for seniors and $15 for the public. Tickets are available by phone at (919) 843-3333 or from the Memorial Hall box office on Cameron Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Carolina students should call the box office for purchasing information. Series subscriptions also are available.
