Unsung Founders Memorial to be dedicated
Saturday (Nov. 5) on UNC’s McCorkle Place
CHAPEL HILL – The community is invited to attend a dedication ceremony for the Unsung Founders Memorial at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this Saturday (Nov. 5). The memorial was the UNC senior class gift for 2002.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the site of the memorial on McCorkle Place quadrangle in front of the Alumni Building, near Franklin Street, on the Carolina campus. Featured speakers will include UNC Chancellor James Moeser and Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little, dean of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, as well as 2002 senior class officers Ben Singer, president, and Byron Wilson, vice president. The student a cappella ensemble Harmonyx will sing, and refreshments will be served. Person Hall will serve as a rain site.
As the memorial’s inscription reads, the piece "honors the university’s unsung founders the people of color bond and free who helped build the Carolina that we cherish today." Installed on McCorkle Place on May 11, the memorial features a stone tabletop supported by 300 bronze figurines.
The piece was created by Do-Ho Suh, an internationally renowned artist. Suh’s major exhibitions include shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Serpentine Gallery in London.
The class of 2002 – joined by matching funds from the UNC Provost’s Office – raised $90,000 to build the memorial. For more information on the memorial, visit: http://carolinafirst.unc.edu/seniors/2002.htm.
