Globe-trotting photojournalist Vitale
to speak, show work, Nov. 28 at UNC
CHAPEL HILL - Photojournalist Ami Vitale, who has captured events and people around the world for Time magazine, The New York Times and other prominent news publications, will describe and display her work Tuesday (Nov. 28) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The National Press Photographers Association's Magazine Photographer of the Year in 2003, Vitale will speak from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of Carroll Hall, the home of her alma mater, the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Sponsored by the UNC student chapter of the photographers association, the program will be free and open to the public. Refreshments and portfolio reviews will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Based in New Delhi, Vitale has covered stories in the Balkans, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Africa and elsewhere. Other news periodicals that have published her work include The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report.
Her other awards include more honors from the national press photographers, several from the Pictures of the Year International contest sponsored by the University of Missouri, one from the professional organization World Press Photo, Spain's International Award of Photojournalism and a first place in the Czech Republic's Press Photo contest.
Vitale was the North Carolina Press Photographers Association's College Photographer of the Year runner-up in 1992 and 1993. She graduated from Carolina in 1993.
