Partners in creation of Innovation Center to present plans to community Nov. 29

Alexandria Real Estate Equities and UNC staff members will present drawings of the proposed Innovation Center for the Carolina North campus to the community and ask for feedback at a meeting Nov. 29, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road.

The public is invited to attend this meeting. Free parking is available, and refreshments will be served.

The university has submitted a concept plan for the Innovation Center, to be located at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the former Municipal Drive, to the Town of Chapel Hill. The Chapel Hill Town Council is currently scheduled to review the plan at its Jan. 23, 2008, meeting.

The 85,000-square-foot Innovation Center will provide much-needed space and resources for UNC faculty and staff who have intellectual property with commercial potential to turn those ideas into products and businesses.

The Innovation Center will be built as a partnership with a private developer, Alexandria Real Estate Equities of Pasadena, Calif., which specializes in this type of business accelerator. Although the center will be located on university-owned land at Carolina North, the building will be privately owned and will pay taxes to the local community.
