American Civil Rights Institute head to speak

CHAPEL HILL -- Ward Connerly, chairman of the American Civil Rights Institute, will discuss affirmative action issues Tuesday (Dec. 2) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He is scheduled to speak at 8:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. Co-sponsors are the Carolina Conservative Coalition and the Young America's Foundation.

As a member of the University of California Board of Regents, Connerly led a recent effort to end the use of race in admissions. As chairman of the California Civil Rights Initiative (Proposition 209) campaign, Connerly worked for its passage in November 1996 before creating the American Civil Rights Institute.

Connerly is president and chief executive officer of Connerly and Associates Inc., a housing and association management consulting firm. He serves on the board of the California Chamber of Commerce and is chairman of the California Governor's Foundation.

The Carolina Conservative Coalition, a recognized student group at UNC-CH, has a board consisting of the chairmen of campus groups including the Carolina Review, Common Sense, Students for Life and Liberty and the UNC Young Republicans.
