UNC awards nearly $400,000 in scholarships to students with merit and financial need

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently honored 60 freshmen and five nursing students with its most prestigious need-based merit awards, the annual James M. Johnston Scholarships. The freshman scholarships are renewable for additional years of study.
All students with financial need are considered for Johnston Scholarships, but merit determines the winners. Stipends vary among recipients according to need and cover all their expenses.
UNC awarded totals of $362,533 to freshmen and $25,357 to nursing students, for $387,890 in new Johnston Scholarships this year. The total awarded to all new and returning Johnston Scholars was just over $1.2 million.
Johnston Scholars have numerous opportunities to widen their intellectual horizons and grow personally and socially. Each is assigned a faculty mentor who organizes extracurricular learning opportunities and offers friendship, guidance and support.
Johnston seminars are taught by Carolina faculty or distinguished visitors and are offered each semester for academic credit. Johnston Scholars suggest topics for the seminars and are given preference for enrollment. The scholars also plan and execute an annual spring issues forum.
The awards are funded by the Johnston Trust, founded by the late James M. Johnston, an Orange County native and former UNC student (1912-15) who established a successful investment banking firm in Washington, D.C., and owned the Washington Senators baseball team in the 1960s.
"The Johnston Scholarships are a great example of the alumni support that enables Carolina to ensure enrollment of outstanding students despite any financial limitations they may have," said Dr. Dan Thornton, senior assistant director for scholarships in UNC’s Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. "Carolina is fortunate to have such exceptional donor support."
The Johnston Trust’s current support for the scholarships count toward Carolina First, the historic, multi-year private fund-raising campaign that aims to position Carolina as the nation’s leader among public universities.
The Johnston Scholarships are among several prestigious privately funded scholarship programs at Carolina. Others that are merit-based include the Morehead Awards, now more than a half-century old and given by the John Motley Morehead Foundation, the Robertson Scholars Program, an innovative new joint program with Duke University, and the Carolina Scholars Awards.
Besides the 60 general winners, the university recognized five nursing students with Johnston Nursing Awards, a special focus of the Johnston program. Undergraduates entering the UNC School of Nursing as juniors and graduate nursing students are eligible.
This year’s winners include Heidi Abell of Jacksonville, Jessica Albrecht of Raleigh, Lindsey Chea Leach of Monroe and Amanda Beth Quig of Chapel Hill. (A fifth winner chose not to release information).
Winners are chosen based on academic achievement and financial need. They are included in most of the Johnston program's special events, and a senior award is given annually for the most outstanding nursing student.
Listed below by North Carolina county, and by state for out-of-state students, are 55 of the 2002-03 Johnston Scholars. (Five freshmen and one nursing winner chose not to release information). Johnston Nursing Scholars are listed at the end. Asterisks denote students listed in more than one location. For more information, call the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, (919) 962-9494.
