Activities, lectures to accompany ‘Plum, Pine and Bamboo’
CHAPEL HILL -- The following events, all free and open to the public, will
accompany the exhibition "Plum, Pine, and Bamboo: Seasonal and Spiritual
Paths in Japanese Art," Oct. 19-Jan. 4 at the Ackland Art Museum of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Events will be in the museum or next door at the Hanes Art Center. Both
buildings are on South Columbia Street near Franklin Street. Paid parking is
available in the Swain lot off Cameron Avenue.
- Oct. 19, lecture by Sondra Castile, chief East Asian art conservator at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 3 p.m., Hanes Art Center Auditorium. Exhibit
opening reception, 3-5 p.m., the Ackland.
- Nov. 3-8, "Aesthetics of Nirvana: Truth, Beauty and Enlightenment in
Japanese Buddhism," a conference at the Ackland and other campus

- Nov. 9, Family Fun Tour: Learn more about Japanese screens and scrolls,
touch some traditional materials used to make them and explore some of the
subjects and symbols involved. Recommended for 5- to 12-year olds. 2 p.m.,
the Ackland.
- Nov. 16, "Metamorphosis of a Theme: Chinese Birds and Flowers in
Japanese Ink Painting," lecture by Dr. Barbara Ford, curator of
Japanese art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. 3 p.m., Hanes
Art Center Auditorium.
- Nov. 19, "Conservation of the Ackland's Birds and Flowers
Screen," talk by Lyn Koehnline, conservator at the Ackland, in the
exhibition gallery. 12:15 p.m.
- Nov. 26, "Plum, Pine and Bamboo" gallery talk with Kendal Korach
Parker, guest curator. 12:15 p.m., the Ackland.
- Nov. 28, "Experiencing Japan," activities including origami,
calligraphy, storytelling and a Japanese tea demonstration. Refreshments
served. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ackland.
- Dec. 10, "Dragons, Art and Buddhist Conceptions of Nature,"
lecture by Dr. Norris Brock Johnson, UNC anthropology professor, on nature
and religion in Japan. 12:15 p.m.
The Ackland opens 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 1-5 p.m.
