New York Times’ ‘Ethicist’
Randy Cohen to speak Oct. 19
CHAPEL HILL – Randy Cohen, The New York Times Magazine’s "The Ethicist" columnist, will discuss his approach to ethical dilemmas in a free public talk Oct. 19 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Cohen will describe some of his most outlandish moments while writing the weekly syndicated column and field questions about ethics from the audience. Afterward, members of the Campus Ministers Association for UNC will join him onstage for a discussion of religious and secular ethics.
The program will start at 7:30 p.m. in the film auditorium of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union off South Road.
Cohen, a regular contributor to "Weekend All Things Considered" on National Public Radio, also is ethics columnist for the Times of London. He wrote "The Good, the Bad and the Difference" (Broadway Books), which is based on his columns.
He has won three Emmy Awards for television writing. He previously wrote for "Late Night With David Letterman," "TV Nation" and "The Rosie O’Donnell Show."
Cohen has written humorous pieces, essays and stories for newspapers and magazines including The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Atlantic and Young Love Comics. Previously he wrote "The News Quiz," a comedy column, for Slate, the online magazine.
Cohen’s presentation is sponsored by the Ben and Ruth Perlmutter Ethics in our Time Series of North Carolina Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life; and the Parr Center for Ethics in the College of Arts and Sciences. Additional support was provided by the Burns’ Endowment in Ethics and the Campus Ministers Association.
