Pianist Ehlen to perform Oct. 24
in 12th Newman series at UNC
CHAPEL HILL – Pianist Timothy Ehlen, whose music is broadcast frequently on National Public Radio, will perform Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His performance will continue this year’s William S. Newman Artist Series presented by the UNC music department, which honors the late UNC music professor, historian and performing artist.
Now in its 12th season, the series will include a Nov. 19 concert and multimedia presentation that also is part of a Milestones Music Festival presented by UNC and Duke University. The festival, Nov. 14-21, will showcase recent and landmark works of the 20th and 21st centuries. Concerts by faculty, guest and student performers will take place at both schools. For details, visit http://www.unc.edu/depts/music/concerts.html.
Other Newman series concerts will feature a string quartet with piano, chamber singers and concertos and Baroque music. The concerts will be in Hill Hall Auditorium, off East Franklin Street across from the post office.
"The Newman series showcases performers with relevance to our students and music community," said music professor Dr. Richard Luby, series coordinator. "We invite artists who collaborate with our faculty and student ensembles."
Ehlen, assistant professor of piano at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has performed in prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall. He is considered a leading soloist and teacher, Luby said.
In the Milestones Music Festival Gala Concert, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. in Hill Hall, more than 300 undergraduates from UNC and Duke will perform classical compositions from more than 100 years of music, by artists new and old.
UNC groups will include the Wind and Percussion ensembles and the UNC Symphony Orchestra. UNC’s Carolina Choir will perform the world premier of a piece by New York composer C. Bryan Rulin. Choir director Susan Klebanow, UNC music professor and associate department chair, commissioned the piece with support from UNC’s Institute of the Arts and Humanities.
Also during the program, Nuria Schoenberg-Nono will present a multimedia portrait of her late father, Austro-Hungarian composer Arnold Schoenberg.
The remaining Newman concerts, all at 8 p.m., will be:
Jan. 22: The Vega Quartet of New York will perform the Schumann Piano Quintet with Thomas Otten, associate professor of piano at UNC. The group also will play string quartets by Haydn and Ligeti.
Feb. 12: UNC music professor Dr. Thomas Warburton, pianist, and Luby, violinist, will perform music by Dvorák and Berg, with music professor and associate department chair Dr. Michael Votta Jr. conducting.
April 3: The UNC baroque group Ensemble Courant and the UNC Chamber Singers, conducted by Klebanow, will present the music of Bach and Handel.
