Bridgewater, McPartland
to jazz up Memorial Hall
CHAPEL HILL — Jazz greats Dee Dee Bridgewater and Marian McPartland will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The concert in Memorial Hall is part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.
Bridgewater, a Grammy- and Tony Award-winning artist, is considered one of the finest and most versatile jazz vocalists of her generation. Nominated for London theater's Laurence Olivier Award for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in "Lady Day," she is a glittering ambassador for jazz.
A writer for the Los Angeles Times described Bridgewater as "a musical free spirit if ever there was one ... brilliant scat singing, propulsive swing rhythm and gorgeously lush tone colors."
McPartland, whom Newsday called "the first lady of piano jazz," has been a force on the jazz scene for decades. She founded and hosts the longest-running national performance program on radio: NPR’s "Piano Jazz," a weekly hour of jazz sessions that has showcased newcomers and established artists since 1978. Locally, the show airs from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays on WNCU-FM, 90.7.
Single tickets – $30 to $60 for the public and $10 for Carolina students – are available by calling (919) 843-3333, or from the Memorial Hall box office on Cameron Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Carolina students should call the box office for purchasing information. Series subscriptions also are available.
On performance days, the box office is open from 10 a.m. until intermission. For more information, e-mail performingarts@unc.edu or visit www.unc.edu/performingarts.
