Expert on ‘new federalism’ to deliver
Deil S. Wright Lecture on Nov. 2

CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. Richard Nathan will deliver the Deil S. Wright Lecture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Government on Nov. 2.

The lecture is free to the public and will be at 2 p.m. in the Knapp-Sanders Building, located on the southwest corner of Raleigh and Country Club roads.

Nathan’s lecture, titled "There Is Always a New Federalism," will focus on how the relationships among the federal, state and local levels of government are constantly changing.

Nathan is co-director of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government, a part of the State University of New York; the institute conducts research and creates projects on the role and management of state and local governments. Nathan also is the Distinguished professor of political science and public policy at SUNY.

Nathan has written several books, including "Handbook for the Governing Class: Appointed Officials in America’s Governments." He formerly was assistant director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, deputy undersecretary for welfare reform of the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare (now the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) and director of domestic policy for the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders.

"He’s a leading scholar in the area of relationships among governments," said Dr. Gordon Whitaker, professor of public administration and government in UNC’s School of Government. "We look for a distinguished expert – sometimes from academe and sometimes from the field of practice – who is an expert in governmental affairs and the way in which our governments respond to the public problems that face us."

UNC’s Master of Public Administration Alumni Association established the lecture series in 2001 to honor Dr. Deil S. Wright, Alumni distinguished professor of political science and public administration at UNC. Each year, public administration experts are invited to the school to discuss issues that public officials encounter.

UNC’s School of Government is the largest university-based local government training, advising and research organization in the nation, offering more than 200 classes, seminars, schools and specialized conferences for up to 14,000 public officials annually. The school’s highly ranked two-year Master of Public Administration Program serves up to 60 students annually.
