Musical 'Rent' added to lineup
for Carolina Performing Arts
CHAPEL HILL - Carolina Performing Arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will present the national touring production of "Rent" at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30.
Just added to the 2006-2007 season, the show will be the first Broadway musical in Memorial Hall since the building's reopening last year.
Tickets will go on sale Monday (Oct. 9) at 10 a.m. and be available in three ways: online at www.carolinaperformingarts.org, by calling (919) 843-3333 or by visiting the Memorial Hall Box Office on Cameron Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Tickets are $34 to $75 for the public; a limited quantity of $10 tickets is available for UNC students.
"Rent" won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and four Tony Awards, including best musical, in 1996, the year it opened on Broadway. The New York Times reported that the show "shimmers with hope for the future of the American musical." Still playing at the Nederlander Theatre, "Rent" is now the seventh longest-running show on Broadway.
"Rent" is about being young, learning to survive, falling in love, finding your voice and living for today," said Emil Kang, UNC's executive director for the arts. "This musical made a lasting mark on Broadway with songs that rock and a story that resonates."
