Sir Walter Raleigh to be topic of UNC professor's free talk

CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. Christopher Armitage, an English professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss "Sir Walter Raleigh: Fortune's Tennis Ball" at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at UNC-Wilmington.

Reservations should be made by Sept. 19 for the free public talk in the Warwick Ballroom at 601 S. College Road. For reservations or information, call (910) 962-3644.

Armitage, who joined the UNC faculty in 1967, specializes in 17th- and 20th-century English and Canadian literature. A 1954 graduate of Oxford University, he returns to his alma mater every summer to conduct a six-week study program on "Shakespeare in Performance" and "The Literature of Oxford." In 1958, Armitage received his master’s from Oxford. He earned a second master’s from the University of Western Ontario in Canada in 1964 and a doctorate from Duke University in 1967.

The lecture was arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC. The outreach program brings more than 90 faculty members to business, civic and community groups across the state. The speakers share their expertise on more than 150 topics, including 46 that focus on North Carolina and the South.
